Lying

That happens to me all the time. I started to believe my own lies!

It doesn't feel like lying though… It's like I've filled in the parts of my life I don't want people to know about with something different. And I believe it. I've written my own story… I need to stop… Is this a super common result of bipolar?

I used to have this problem when I was younger. I think it stemmed from wanting attention when I was little and a teen. I realized it was a HUGE problem in my early 20's and had to put in a lot of effort to stop. It ultimately made me reevaluate who I was as a person and own up to myself what the truth really was. Glad I broke that bad habit!!

I am well known for always saying the truth, but it really really angers me when I am lied to… Im aware when this happens and confront the person- if they deny it, my arguing never ends :(

I am a very honest person and always seemed like i have to apologize for it. Glad to know I am not the only one..I hate being lied to also. I don't understand lying. I don't mean to sound arrogant but just the way I am.

I get paid to lie so when I do it's believable 😄 LOL
Also, I prefer not lie to the people close to me.
There is also a lie by omission and a lie made true by careful word play
The best way to lie is by placing yourself there visually and to believe it

Yes I do it… It's not intentional… I'm tired of telling people I am not doing well.. So I tell them I'm fine. My family and my so called friends don't want to hear I'm not doing well. When I talk to them they sigh and start to look around…

Give the new man the same faith you give your son. Those issues your son has aren't new to you and maybe a fresh eye on old topics might change things. Like they say if you find a locked door, look out the window to see if anyone can help.

I've lied but not intentionally. My memory is shot and I forgot stuff that happened.

I have done this so much. It makes my sister mad but I don't wanna do it intentionally but I end up doing it anyways. I feel so bad!

Yes, I have actually told someone something and not realized I was lying or had left out a very important fact. After that happens I feel really bad and have to make it right and look stupid.

Oh gosh yes. Its annoying and gets me in trouble. I honestly dont even mean to lie, it just comes out. And a lot of the time theres no point in lying, no reason to be that way..but it just spills out for no special reason.

I find myself doing that quite a bit, it also has seemed to get worse as I get older…I know weird right!! Please let me know if anything you are doing to get yourself in control…any help is much appreciated

This used to be a horrible habit of mine. I didn't want anyone to know the real me. Then, I realized the truth, and who I am, are so much better than I ever knew.

Absolutely! I have done this since I was about 14… Things are a little better these days but that is after several years of therapy, medication, and teaching my daughter the importance of telling the truth.
My lying was so severe that I actually started believing my lies. I couldn't remember what had actually happened or what I had fabricated. Even today I wonder how much of my past "really" happened.
I have caught myself falling back into this on several occasions. It's easy to fall, not so much to pick up the pieces.
After divorce, loss of a great job, and a severe bout if depression I am starting to learn that the truth, though sometimes downright evil (as anyone with bipolar would know) is most often, actually, the right path to choose.
It's an addiction, one of the hardest to break, there is no medication for lying, no truth sirum that is legal… It is a decision that you have to make and fight through it… And beg for forgiveness when you fall, because you will, it's inevitable, we all do, I still do… But it's so much better knowing your own truth than having to be told "what really happened" when discussing your own past and experiences.

I lie so no one knows truly how I'm doing. You always hide Behind a smile and everyone thinks your fine!

I think that is a different kind of lying…How many times do you hear I am terrible when somebody asks you something?.

I found myself lying to a lot of people, and I actually hurt a lot of people and it cost me my marriage and my family. I was diagnosed bipolar after the divorce and I now spend everyday wishing I could take back the pain and the hurt I've caused. I now look to tomorrow as a new day to right my wrongs and just focus on being the best dad I can be for my two little ones

I do this! Ive always thought it was me doing wrong…I've always been taught that lying is bad…but some times it feels as if its out of my control.

Constantly! I've done it since my teens. I can't tell you why. To fit in? To make people like me? To make people feel good? To cover up all my insecurities… Sometimes even I don't know what's truth or lie. Wish I could change this.

No, I don't usually lie. Only the occasional white lie for the sake of peace or to protect my privacy.

I lied because the situation afyer lying brought me advantages and oppurtunities. Then i limit myself and leave those lies, but i always wonder where the reward is from sacrificing of lying. Unsatisfaction makes exp. bigger and then you expect more

I lie too because I don't want to hurt my family or my friends. I told them that I'm okay when I'm not okay. I lie my ex boyfeiend to not hurt him too..

I know what you are going through. I would lie over the smallest of things. adam89 I think has the best comment about telling a lie just to make people happy. It has been an issue that does cause arguments between my wife and I.

I lie because I'm either embarrassed of the truth or because the other way is what I wish would of happened. Then once it's out there I believe it myself.

My husband is not taking his medication and is there anything a spouse do to help and make sure he's medicated? Since he stopped he is not the person I know or married . He is like a stranger to me. Any advice please.

My husband does it constantly and doesn't even realize it. Really believes his lies and has cut out all the ones that love him. Does it cause self destructive and things that will cause him to criminal acts and avoid the truth ?

I've spent so many years teaching myself to fake it whenever I'm in one of the extremes of my spectrum that I constantly lie about my emotional state. Of course, those who are closest to me have learned to see through this smokescreen and maybe others do too. I have gotten quite good at this skill, although it is very exhausting. I'm trying to spare others' concern, but it makes me feel so dishonest all of the time. I've also convinced myself that this self-induced control is somehow good for me as well. Maybe it is at times, but I miss myself. I guess I'd call it behavioral lithium.

Wow it feels good to hear someone else. It's the "very exhausting"—that made me respond. I lie, and well, at work which makes me so tired I come home and literally crash. Which turns into isolated weekends. Odd hours. Basically a bad cocktail for any form of BPD.

I do this too, lying through behavior to mask whatever is going on for me. I find if I am doing this I become really disassociated with my own emotions. I am trying to be a bit more open with others because I find it helps me to work out what I am feeling. It is exhausting wearing a mask. Good post :)

Yes. I can relate as well. I do it all the time still. I tend to be the "one upper". For example, you tell a story and I'm going to say "oh, yea. That happened to me too" But I will embellish the story to make it sound more fascinating/dangerous then yours.

Me too. I thought I was the only one as well. Great post. I've done all of the above thinkining that I'm in your face telling the truth. People call me the "storyteller" for that reason. A little superlative goes a long well and makes the story well worth listening to. I wonder if you grew up in an environment where you felt people didn't listen to you, would that make you more apt to lie to get that attention?

I find myself doing it all the time. I try to stop, but it just doesn't work. I find mostly its about things I have done that I am ashamed of. That, and how I am doing. I tell everyone I don't talk about it because I don't want to burden them with my problems, but the truth is, I just feel like if everyone believes I am fine, then I must be fine for real. So I guess I lie more to convince myself than others. Wow, how did I miss that?

Is is hard for you to tell him the truth cause your afraid of his reaction. My gf is but I've shown her that truth almost makes it ok so to speak.

I have tried and tried to show my gf that as long as shes honest with whatever it is it will be all right. One thing I want from her is honesty no matter how much it hurts me or how ashamed she is. I've shown her that when she tells me the truth I don't get that upset. Truth is I controll it a lot better accepting actions I know she can't really controll. But the only time I get the truth it seems is when I'm at worts end. Maybe I have to accept that she may never tell me the truth.

I feel the same way with my husband. They don't seem to understand that the lie hurts twice as much as the truth. It undermines our trust. It just sucks!!! It's the most eroding thing to breaking down a relationship.

Omg yes!!! That happens to me all the time!!!! My friend pointed it out one day and we laughed about how I seem like I'm lying even when I'm telling the truth. Interesting to know it might be a symptom

Yep. When I was manic (before I knew about BP), I lied perpetually. Now I just say it like it is cuz I don't care what people think. I let the web of lies go to free myself. Trying to keep it up and remembering all the lies was very hard and the source of even higher anxiety. I still have to catch myself though cuz it had become so natural. You almost have to retrain your brain. :P
